Project name: XWiki & CryptPad

Project description:

XWiki is a powerful open-source collaborative platform allowing individuals and organizations of all sizes to structure information and save time and money while enhancing collaboration on both team and organizational levels. Being focused on efficient communication and collaboration, XWiki redefines the value of business knowledge by allowing any user to access critical information in a fast and efficient way while reducing organizational silos.

A complex platform made simple is just what any organization is looking for. Reducing the technical barrier ensures a high adoption rate which is desirable, especially in a non-technical environment. With over 800 extensions, applications, macros, skins, and plugins available, XWiki is one of the most flexible and versatile collaborative platforms out there. Moreover, App within Minutes allows even non-technical users to create their own extensions and continue collaborating efficiently. We know businesses are different, this is why XWiki supports full customization, allowing individuals to choose their method of hosting. Being developed with the help of a community of passionate developers, XWiki is always advancing, which ensures flawless compatibility, strong security, and performant features.

CryptPad is a collaborative office suite that is end-to-end encrypted and open-source by design. You can use it to share rich text, spreadsheets, polls, presentations, whiteboard functions, forms, kanban, and code/markdown. The project answers both the need for real-time editing and collaboration, and the need for privacy. Registration is free with no personal data required with a 1GB storage available for your CryptDrive. Registration is free with no personal data required with a 1GB storage available for your CryptDrive.

All the content stored on CryptPad is encrypted before being sent, which means nobody can access your data unless you give them the keys (not even us). With CryptPad, you can make quick collaborative documents for taking notes and writing down ideas together. When you sign up and log in, you get file upload capability and a CryptDrive where you can organize all of your pads. You can share access to a CryptPad document simply by sharing the link. Whenever you access a pad in CryptPad, the pad is automatically added to your CryptDrive in the main folder. Later on, you can organize these pads into folders, or you can put them in the trash bin. CryptDrive allows you to search through your pads and organize them whenever you want, however you want. With intuitive drag-and-drop, you can move pads around in your drive and the link to these pads will stay the same, so your collaborators will never lose access. You can also upload files in your CryptDrive and share them with colleagues. Uploaded files can be organized just like collaborative pads.

Why do you want to be at FOSDEM?

For many years, the XWiki project has been present at FOSDEM on the "Wiki and CMS" software stand, and in 2019 we have teamed up with Cryptpad for a common stand of the projects. For 2024, we would like to keep this formula, as it has turned out to be very well received by participants. The reason we would like to apply for this stand with the Cryptpad project, and not on our own, is simply because our two development teams share several developers that are involved in both XWiki and Cryptpad.
Knowledge sharing and private real-time collaboration, our specialties, are becoming a necessity, especially in the public sector in Europe. This last year, we have seen an increasing number of inquiries for Open Source solutions for public institutions. One such project that XWiki is part of, in which we dedicated significant resources, and that will benefit public transport is the open-source openDesk project, an initiative led by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Home Affairs (BMI). This project is part of a joint strategy to strengthen the digital sovereignty of the federal, state and local authorities as well as an essential step towards resolving critical dependencies in public transport IT through open-source solutions. Furthermore, our open-source openDesk partners will join FOSDEM 2024 (Collabora, Matrix, NextCloud) and we believe such a stand is a great medium to showcase the 1st version of the software, planned to be released at the end of 2023.

Besides this very exciting ongoing open-source project, there have been a few other exciting projects and improvements we've worked on since FOSDEM 2023 that we'd like to present at FOSDEM 2024, such as:

  • XWiki underwent one development cycle (in progress). The 15.x cycle is defined by having improved usability for users and administrators: from quick editing actions, to listing of extensions vulnerabilities in the instance, to documents, and images macros improvements. The 15.x cycle focuses PDF export, and notifications improvements, WCAG accessibility improvements, not to mention a lot of performance, and security updates. We've also started exploring and prototyping for a LLM AI application, and we'd like to present at the stand our work-in-progress. Last but not least, a modernization project of the open-source XWiki project is in progress as we speak. The purpose of this endeavor is to build a new modular wiki UI using modern web technologies, which will support multiple backends (including of course XWiki) to store Wiki data.
  • On the CryptPad side, many big improvements have been worked on, namely 2 Factor Authentification, Draw.io integrated into the Diagram application, OnlyOffice, and Form updates, deployment of CryptPad using a Docker container. We also documented the use of cryptography in CryptPad into a white paper as part of CryptPad Blueprints project that will further serve for future CryptPad developments. Further work will be done for including SSO authentification into CryptPad.

Experience with the previous FOSDEM editions has shown that this is usually one of the most requested demands that we get: people approach us and ask about how they can solve a specific problem. Almost every time, we can offer them a qualitative solution.
